Take your time

When first starting to use online dating, don't be afraid to go slow. Start off by only messaging each other and watch out for any strange behavior. The other person may not be telling you the truth. If at any point you feel uneasy, stop talking to that person for your own safety.


Be Cautious

Don't just jump right into something if you feel uncomfortable. Take your time and get to know the other person before making any plans to meet. If you think that someone is lying to you or if you are feeling pressured, then take a step back and think before things go too far. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Always trust your instincts!


Don't reveal too much too soon

The advantage of online dating is that you can really get to know someone before making any commitments and you can do so from the privacy of your home. Never give out information on your name, address, telephone number, or place of work when first communicating with daters. Wait until you are absolutely ready to divulge such information and make sure that you can trust the other person. Some people may try to trick you or pressure you into giving out your personal information. If you find that happening, cut off communication with that person.


Ask a lot of questions

Asking a lot of questions about the other person will help you detect if they are right for you, and more importantly, if they are lying or not. Look for any inconsistency with what they say. If you suspect any foul play, call it quits.


Ask for a photo

Sometimes you can tell alot about a person by their appearance. Appearance may not be important to you in finding a match, but if you see something in their eye that just isn't quite right, it's a sign that you should be careful.

Talk on the phone

Talking on the phone can tell you alot about a person's personality and motives. The tone of their voice, the language they use, and even whether they try pressuring you on the phone can be indicators that you should not go any farther with this person. Also, try talking to them on a public phone or a cell phone with a private number as to avoid posting your personal number on any caller ID.


Meet in a safe place

If you do choose to meet face to face, pick a location that is a busy public area that is familiar to you. You may want to plan to meet during the day on a first encounter to be extra safe.

Tell a friend

Let somebody know that you will be going out on a blind date and make arrangements to check in every so often so they know that you're okay. Let them know where you're going and when you plan to return, or even bring a friend along for the first encounter.
